How Do You Know If You Are Having a Stroke?
May is American Stroke Awareness Month. When it comes to a stroke, minutes matter.
Our team at AFC Urgent Care Spring Hill want you to know the warning signs of a stroke, as well as things you can do to help reduce your risk of having a stroke now and in the future.
How Many People Have a Stroke Each Year?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 140,000 people living in the United States pass away from a stroke each year. Someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds, which is why it is so important to know the symptoms of a stroke so that medical attention can be sought as soon as possible.
The most common way to check for a stroke is to use the F.A.S.T. method, which is when you check a person’s face, arms and speech for signs of impairment. If you see someone’s face droop to the side, one arm drop down or he or she has slurred speech, it is important to seek medical attention ASAP.
Symptoms of a Stroke
- Numbness or weakness in your face, arm or leg, especially on one side
- Confusion or trouble understanding other people
- Problems walking or staying balanced or coordinated
- Dizziness
- Severe headache that comes on for no reason
- Difficulty speaking
- Trouble seeing with one or both eyes
What Is the Best Way to Be Prepared for Someone Having a Stroke?
You always want to do what you can to prepare for an emergency—even though you hope one doesn’t happen. When you are prepared, you are best able to care for the people you love in a timely manner.
Therefore, be as prepared as possible by learning the symptoms of a stroke, as well as teaching your loved ones (children included) the F.A.S.T. test. The most important lesson to note about stroke is that immediate medical attention is needed when stroke symptoms occur—call 911 to be transported to the hospital and begin receiving emergency care.
Ways to Prevent a Stroke
- Lower your blood pressure, if needed.
