How Can I Protect My Skin From the Sun?

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society.

But the risk of skin cancer doesn’t have to keep you indoors. Our team at AFC Urgent Care Spring Hill wants to share some tips on protecting your skin this summer.

What Is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer occurs when abnormal skin cells form, which is usually caused by the sun. There are three different types of skin cancer—basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. The most common type of skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma.

Fortunately, if caught early, skin cancer is also one of the most treatable cancers, which is why it is important to recognize the signs.

Signs of Skin Cancer

  • A sore that doesn’t heal
  • A new mole or abnormal spot on skin
  • Spread of pigment from the border of a spot into surrounding skin
  • Redness or a new swelling
  • Itchiness, tenderness or pain

Can I Prevent Skin Cancer?

One in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70. Therefore, it is important to do what you can to make sure you protect your skin and lower your risk of skin cancer.

Ways to Protect Your Skin

  • Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
  • Wear sunglasses with UVA and/or UVB protection.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Avoid the sun during the midday when the sun’s rays are most intense.
  • Seek shade when possible.
